OpenAFS for Linux requires a kernel module. If Linux updates include a new kernel, the module must be either rebuilt from source, or copied/linked from the old kernel to the new one. The recommended way to manage this on Red Hat, Fedora, CentOS, and other Red Hat-derived distributions is as follows:

Post-install configuration

After installation, you must edit the 1-line file /usr/vice/etc/ThisCell to read:
northstar.dartmouth.edu
Then start the service with service openafs-client start. The installation packages will have configured the service to start on future reboots.

At this point you should have /afs mounted, and be able to authenticate using klog. There are many client parameters which can be tuned to improve performance or security in specific circumstances. Please consult the documentation at OpenAFS.org, or ask Research Computing for advice.
